Career counseling is all about connecting the dots…
I have always loved connecting and making connections. In recruitment it was connecting the two parties for a win-win situation, especially young graduates with employers offering that ever so important first job.
In coaching – it is finding that connection to one’s true self and calling. Furthermore, it is reaching that all-elusive ‘perfect match’ that inspires me, when people match their true potential and passion with work that enables them to grow and develop in accordance with their strengths and highest values – whether it is a job, a career or developing their own business.
There is something indescribably fulfilling in assisting people on their way to raising self-awareness, broadening their view and understanding of themselves, their life, their relationship to others and their life’s work. It is also true that more often than not it is easier to see others than our own selves. By providing a mirror, a sounding board for exploration of ideas and options, a coach is there to support without judgement.
I coach and guide clients to gain clarity, set goals and achieve them. In order to gain clarity first, I challenge my clients to identify, dissolve and overcome blocks, resistance and confusion on the way. So how do you do that?
Start with the basics – WHAT, WHY, HOW? A starting point before taking any action is to identify what you want to do, what you want to achieve. Is it a career change? Is it a new job? Is it getting un-stuck from a job you don’t like and finding out what it is that you really would love doing?
There are many ways to clarify the ‘what’, from listing and prioritising your life values and work values, to working on past and future scenarios.
For exploration of your deepest values, I find the Value Determination tool created by the amazing Dr Demartini to be really powerful.
Even though I prefer my clients to list their own values and how they perceive them, if you are stuck, this list will give you some ideas about some values that commonly appear as important.
Or, imagine having a magic wand – and ask yourself, ‘If I had all the health, money, time, relationships, etc that I want, what would I do?’ Open up the gates to imagination, intuition and creativity and see what comes out. I invite you to share the insights with me, if you feel inspired, contact me or leave a comment below.
