In order to penetrate the many layers of programming we have received over the years from parents, teachers, preachers… it is truly important to start getting in touch with your desires – to be able to ‘tap into your intuition’, to ‘tune into your gut feeling’, to ‘access your inner guidance’ or to ‘think from the heart’… How do you do that? There are many techniques and tools that could be used and I will share some basics here, mostly from my own experience.
Most of us think about our active time during the day and how we can best prioritise, multi-task and basically become productivity ninjas. Rarely do we think about the time we sleep, or the time and space we are in when we are neither awake nor asleep. The best time for getting in touch with your desires is at those times you can let your subconscious mind work and guide you towards choices and solutions that otherwise elude you.
Using the precious 5 minutes at bedtime, just before you fall asleep, can bring many benefits to your sleeping and waking hours. If you do not do it already, I suggest doing a small gratitude process, where you reflect on the day just gone and bring back to memory all you can be grateful for. It can be anything really, small and big. The meal you enjoyed, the friend who made you laugh, the task you performed successfully, the weather that was nice… the commute that was smooth, or the music you listened to in the car… your health, your talents, your family, the roof over your head…
The purpose of this is to enable you to bring a closure to the day, on a positive note, and to clear your mind of any negativity, niggling thoughts, doubts and worries… Cultivating gratitude is another great way of getting in touch with your desires, and it is also extremely beneficial for your mental, physical and emotional health, and you will hear more about this in the coming articles. So, once you have brought yourself in a calm and peaceful, content, state, just before you fall asleep, ask yourself – “What do I want?” Let that question hover in your head effortlessly and let it roll around on the waves of your oncoming dreams…The trick is not to engage your mind but just to drift off and let go. In the morning, you may have some clues or not, some of them may come to you in your dreams. Do not be impatient and expect answers straight away, adopt this as a nightly ritual and your subconscious will eventually engage…
Then first thing in the morning, write down three things – intentions for the day. I usually write something like -”Today I want to do…./be…./have….” Bear in mind this is not your usual to-do-list. This is for you to infuse the qualities in your day that you want to see and experience. For example “I want to be productive, focused and calm” or “I want to have inspiration, success and fun” “Today I want to (do) relax” Feel free to improvise and play. Do not over-think, just jot down what comes to you naturally. Gradually your ‘night-time question -what do I want?” will sync with your morning intentions “do/be/have” and imperceptibly you will allow your higher self to guide you.
